Hey hey everyone, welcome back to my little corner of the Interwebs! Hope you are all ready to start the week!
I am super excited (to be honest, when am I not?) because today’s post is the first one in a new series around 2017 Fall trends! I am looking to run it through mid November, with at least 1 post a week focused on cool runway looks. My aim here is simple:
- Take a look at a few of the trends we saw at the 2017 New York Fashion Week, a month-ish ago
- Describe what I personally like about them, or why I think they are interesting
- Finally, as a layperson with a budget, bring them down to my level (and wallet) by modeling one or a couple of lower priced options. I mean, we all like fashion and are excited to see models stroll down the runway, but few of us can shell out the $10K+ required to secure a couture dress. That doesn’t mean we can’t look fly!
This week, we will be taking a look at a trend seen across a few designers this season: tassels/fringes. There were quite a few creations featuring them on the runways; see photos below (courtesy of the Vogue website, collage my own):
I have always loved fringe, and have even featured it here on the blog (wore this skirt again yesterday, actually). I love its movement, the little sway it has with each step I take, and how lively it makes outfits feel. I am in love with this look by Folake from Style Pantry, even though she published it in 2016. I have also been pining for these Lavish Alice pants for so long… They were sold out before I even knew they existed. Finally, who can forget this look by Rihanna at the Brit Awards? Ugh. So pretty.
Truth is, I love fringe and tassels so much that I shot the look I am sharing today BEFORE NYFW. Yep. I have owned this dress for close to a year and even wore it to my holiday party last year. I just loved it so much that I decided to shoot it for the blog; as I was thinking about this mini series, I remembered I had this look ready to go! Voilà!
This shoot actually originated as a self-love shoot. As I mentioned before, I am on a weight loss journey, and I am 2 lbs away from my goal as of yesterday (I was maybe 8 or 10 away in these pics, perhaps?) I am tall, so weight loss (or gain) really does not look like much on me; however, I definitely felt the sluggishness brought on by extra pounds in my body every day.
It was somewhat natural, at that point, to gravitate towards wearing pants every day because I no longer saw definition in my legs, but at some point I actually decided I didn’t care. For this shoot, I had planned other outfits; then, a whim, I also packed this dress and ended up shooting it, because I refused to put my life on pause until I reached some nebulous ideal. I also decided that my legs were worthy of appreciation because they carry me places every day (that’s why there is so many leg photos!) It was a super fun shoot with @tracey_mammolito and also my first time shooting in a studio. I had a BLAST and I am SO happy I did it for myself.
On to the outfit:
I mean, it is just the dress, really. Love it. Wore it 3x (a party, a dinner and this shoot). It is very well made, very heavy, and the beading is intense. The tassels move around every 2 minutes and I love it, but one of them is unraveling a bit (you can see it if you pay close attention to the back shot). The dress is made out of very thick spandex coupled with some net-like material on the sides and chest. It really hugs the body. It has caging details on the sides, and I like the peek-a-boo effect. I would absolutely buy it again and I need to find more places to wear it to!
As far as closing remarks on the tassel/ fringe trend, I actually want to revisit it before the end of the year. I have various shopping carts around the internet still harboring fringe-y outfits for me, and hopefully I can bring this trend to life a couple more times this season!
Thanks for reading my Monday morning musings, and have a phenomenal week! I would love to hear your thoughts on this series and dress below!
